AI driven photonic metasurfaces for environmental and healthcare applications

Proposed Faculty Supervisors: Joby Joseph, Hariprasad Kodamana, Amit Agrawal (University of Cambridge, UK))

The PhD project aims to optimize and design nano-photonic metasurfaces and further realize them experimentally through outsourced nano-photonic fabrication facilities. Photonic metamaterials and metasurfaces have sub-wavelength features, showing special optical properties, further enabling extra-ordinary manipulation, controle and sensing of electromagnetic waves in UV, visible and IR wavelength ranges. Photonic metasurface based structures can show very high quality factor resonance phenomena for extremely high sensitivity measurements of healthcare biomolecules, water and environmental contaminants such as Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which can result into many health issues, including cancer, thyroid disease, and diabetes.

The project involves applying AI techniques to conceptualize optimal metamaterial structures and metasurfaces showing extremely high sensitivity optical resonances, as a photonic sensor. The optimization would involve, their fabrication compatibility, tolerances, optical characteristics, selectivity, sensitivity, product/prototype realizaility etc.

Academic background required: Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics. Relevant knowledge of related topics plus experience in Matlab, Python, AI/ML etc. will be desirable. Strong interest in prototype development is an advantage.
