Integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems for Grid Stability in the UAE: Addressing the Water-Energy Nexus and Desalination Demand with Renewable Energy

Proposed Faculty Supervisors: Ashu Verma, Dibakar Rakshit, B.K. Panigrahi

This PhD project aims to develop a coordinated scheduling approach for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that integrates renewable energy sources and desalination processes to enhance grid stability in the UAE. The focus will be on addressing technical challenges in sustainable power and energy systems, including planning, operation, control, and optimization of power grids with high penetration of renewable and distributed energy sources. The project will involve developing detailed battery cell models through experimental testing of various Li-ion technologies and emerging alternatives, such as sodium-ion and solid-state batteries. Experiments will assess the impact of varying load conditions, State of Charge (SoC), and temperature on battery performance and key parameters. These models will be integrated into power system models for scheduling and operational optimization applications. By optimizing BESS deployment, this research will harmonize renewable energy variability, desalination demand, and grid stability within a comprehensive framework, contributing to sustainable water and energy management in response to the UAEs unique water-energy nexus challenges.

Background required: Candidates should hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical, Energy, or related Engineering fields. A strong foundation in basic Electrical Engineering concepts is essential. Interest in mathematical modeling, hands-on experience with hardware, and proficiency in results analysis are highly desirable.
