Project Description

This Ph.D. project focuses on decarbonizing the fossil fuel sector through advanced Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approaches to evaluate and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across energy-intensive and hard-to-abate sectors. With global fossil fuel-related CO₂ emissions exceeding 35 gigatons annually, achieving net-zero targets requires the development and deployment of disruptive, scalable, and economically viable low-carbon technologies. The research will investigate the decarbonization potential of next-generation technologies in sectors such as sustainable aviation fuels, biofuels, cement, steel, green ammonia, and chemicals, where emissions reductions remain particularly challenging. Using comprehensive LCA methodologies, the project will assess environmental impacts, carbon mitigation potential, energy efficiency, and sustainability trade-offs across the full life cycle of these technologies and industrial pathways. The study aims to generate scientific insights and decision-support frameworks that support the transition toward low-carbon industrial systems while ensuring environmental sustainability, technological feasibility, and long-term climate resilience.

Background Required

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics. Experience with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis is desirable.
