Joby Joseph is Professor, was the founding Head of the Optics and Photonics Centre, and joint faculty at Physics Department, IIT Delhi. He has been a teaching faculty at IIT Delhi since 1996. He worked as Senior Optical Engineer at Aprilis Inc., Maynard, MA, USA, towards the development of an ultra-high density holographic digital data storage device. Before joining IIT Delhi, he carried out post-doctoral research at Kobe University, Japan and Univ. of Massachusetts, Boston, USA.

Prof. Joseph's research interests include Photonics, Optical image processing, Holographic data storage, Digital Holography, Optical data security, Interference lithography, Photonic crystals & metamaterials fabrication, Biosensor, Super-resolution imaging Nanoscopy etc.

He has been principal investigator of various research projects from Govt. of India agencies, European Union and Japan agencies. He has supervised more than 10 PhD dissertations, co-inventor in five US patents and has published around 200 research papers in international journals of repute with a total of more than 6000 citations, h-index of 35 and i10-index of 120.

Prof Joseph's research group named 'Photonics Research Laboratory' at IIT Delhi, has contributed significantly to the field of Photonics, including many practical applications of interest to health and medical industry and India government laboratories. Recently, a technology of "Photonic Chip based Spectrometric Biosensor” has been transferred to a healthcare industry partner. This new technology will enable quick and accurate detection of pathogens, thereby aiding in the prevention of infectious diseases.

Prof. Joseph played a key role in establishing a new academic unit of Optics and Photonics Centre at IIT Delhi in 2021, a first of its kind in India, with a vision to develop into a globally-competitive ‘look-up-to’ centre, from fundamentals to cutting-edge research & innovation, for teaching, training, certification, product development and entrepreneurship. This Centre currently has a faculty strength of 10, PhD students strength of 25 and high number of sponsored research projects.
