Dr Arvind Nema obtained Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Environmental Science & Engineering from IIT Bombay. Since 1997 he has been involved in research, teaching, and consulting in the field of Environmental Engineering and management. He has worked with Environmental Management Centre, Mumbai (1997 - 1999), MN NIT Allahabad (1999 - 2000) and IIM Mumbai (2000 - 2002). He has been working with IIT Delhi since September 2002. He has published 90+ research papers in referred international Journals. He has guided 26 PhDs and 68 master’s theses. His main research focuses on the analysis of environmental systems, environmental impact and risk assessment, and integrated waste management, etc. He also works in the area of application of heuristics in decision making related to environmental management issues in multi-criteria, multi-objective, multi-decision makers’ paradigm.
Dr Nema has contributed as expert member in Central Pollution Control Board’s steering committee for Environmental Action Plan for Critically polluted Areas; Expert Member for CPHEEO, MoUD, Govt of India Committee for Preparing Manual on Sewerage and Sewage Management; Expert Member for MoEF&CC’s Project Steering Committee and Technical Expert Committee for Remediation of Hazardous Waste Contaminated Dump Sites; and Expert Member for the State Environmental Appraisal Committee for evaluating Proposals.
He held the position of Vice-Chairman of GATE from 2012 to 2014 and then served as Chairman from 2014 to 2015. He was Vice-Chairman of JEE (Advanced) from 2015 to 2016 and later became Chairman from 2016 to 2017. He also served as Associate Dean of Hostel Management from 2018 to 2020, Dean of Student Affairs from 2020 to 2022, and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering from 2022 to 2024. He is currently serving as the Provost at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi – Abu Dhabi. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Governors at IIT Delhi.
